The primary goal of our field verification project was to locate, measure, photograph, and georeference tiles, pipes, culverts, and other hydrology information throughout Franklin County. More than 1,300 stream miles and 200+ pond, basin, and reservoir perimeter miles were inventoried by field staff using global positioning systems (GPS) and digital cameras. Staff collected 36,582 data points, including 17,945 outfall locations, 10,000+ surface points, 5,769 cross-overs, and 2,772 miscellaneous points.
Benefits of the Drainage Mapping Program include:
- Provides sub meter accuracy of the locations and sizes of outlets, which enables the drainage layer to serve as a drainage guidebook for developing watersheds.
- Gathered data can combine with cross-sectional information for hydrologic modeling.
- Assists the establishment of storm water lines in GIS format.
- Locates potential point source pollution outlets to assist entities in NPDES Phase II compliance.
- Saves staff time and expenses by allowing accurate drainage information to be accessed by computer rather than requiring a site inspection for complex development applications.
Franklin Soil & Water is a neutral agency foremost concerned with the integrity and utility of data. We are able to collect and share data across jurisdictional boundaries while bringing a set data collection standard to the project, reducing inaccuracies in the data. Franklin Soil & Water provides an extensive amount of expertise in historical and technological drainage data while reducing the cost of an inventory through the use of state match funding.
