American Filbert is a native shrub that forms rounded thickets 8-15’ tall and wide. In spring, short, yellow-brown catkins bloom (male flowers), followed by female flowers maturing in summer to edible nuts that are eaten by wildlife. A great choice for naturalizing, American Filbert prefers sites with full sun to partial shade and moist, well-drained soil. Tolerates wind, alkaline soils and black walnut trees.
