The ENVIROTHON is designed to stimulate, reinforce and enhance interest in the environment and natural resources among high school students. The Envirothon tests students’ knowledge of soils, forestry, wildlife, aquatic ecology, current environmental issues and encourages cooperative decision-making and team building. While each student on a team is challenged to contribute his or her personal best, the score that counts at the end is the team score.

In Ohio, the Envirothon is sponsored by the Ohio Federation of Soil and Water Conservation Districts (OFSWCD). Five “Area Envirothons” are conducted around Ohio late each spring. The top four teams from each of these Area competitions progress to the state contest in June.

2021 Area 5 Envirothon

Each year, Franklin Soil and Water assists local schools with the competition while natural resource and environmental specialists from many agencies, organizations, colleges, universities, park districts and businesses devise the Envirothon questions and staff the various test stations. The COVID-19 virus continues to impact school systems and communities statewide, each dealing with their own unique situations and challenges. For this reason, Ohio has decided to continue its Envirothon program virtually in 2021.

Please visit the Area 5 Envirothon Website for the most up-to-date information and resources for the Area 5 Envirothon.

Franklin SWCD is able to provide virtual presentations and resource materials to teams. Please contact us for additional information or to schedule a program.

The theme for the 2021 Envirothon is "Water Resource Management: Local Control and Local Solutions".

Want to Get Involved?

It is our hope, as resource professionals, to push the minds of young people to realize the interrelationship of all living things and to look towards the future of resource management. We are always looking for Envirothon volunteers, mentors and sponsors. If you or your business are interested in becoming involved, please get in contact with our education team!
