The ENVIROTHON is designed to stimulate, reinforce and enhance interest in the environment and natural resources among high school students. The Envirothon tests students’ knowledge of soils, forestry, wildlife, aquatic ecology, current environmental issues and encourages cooperative decision-making and team building. While each student on a team is challenged to contribute their personal best, the score that counts at the end is the team score.
In Ohio, the Envirothon is sponsored by the Ohio Federation of Soil and Water Conservation Districts (OFSWCD). Five “Area Envirothons” are conducted around Ohio late each spring. The top four teams from each of these Area competitions progress to the state contest in June.
Each year, natural resources professionals and environmental specialists devise Envirothon questions, and staff the test stations during the Area 5 Envirothon competition. Franklin Soil and Water assists local schools by providing presentations and resource materials to teams preparing for the competition. The current issue for the 2023 Envirothon is “Adapting to a Changing Climate.” Additional information can be found at
2023 NCF-Envirothon New Brunswick.
The 2023 Area 5 Envirothon is scheduled to be an in-person competition on
Tuesday, April 25, 2022 at Lake Hope State Park in Plymouth, Ohio. Please visit the
